Halloween Treat Bags Before It’s Too Late

Are you in a pinch for a cute Halloween treat bag? Look no further, I’ve got a really cute one. Now a little disclaimer here: I made my treat bags for my Sunday School class, so I made Christian treat bags, but don’t you worry, non-denominational treat bags are actually even easier! Here are all the items you need:

Pumpkin Bag Supplies

And here are the steps:

Cut green paper to the width of your paper bag. Rip top of paper so that paper is about 2/3 the height of the bag.

Cut pumpkin shape out of orange paper.

Cut eyes, nose and mouth out of black paper. For the Christian pumpkin, I used a star punch for the eyes, cut out a cross of my own design for the nose and drew a Christian fish symbol (an icthus, I believe, but I couldn’t find it in the dictionary) with Sharpie for the mouth. You can use your punches for the non-denominational Jack O’Lantern (triangles, circles or ovals-use your imagination).

Cut a stem from dark green paper.

Stamp the letters for “Trick Or Treat” on a piece of neutral cardstock using different color inks for each letter. Cut out the letters individually.

Now, you are ready to start adhesing (yes, I am inventing my own verb here) the items to the paper bag. Start by adhesing the green background to the bag, then stick on the pumpkin and stem, then the parts of the face, then the letters to spell “Trick Or Treat”.

After everything was adhered to the bag, I sprayed the bag with walnut ink just to distress it a little. You know how I hate my creations to look like they are new!

Next, load your bags with treats, fold over the top of the bag, punch two holes in the top and string raffia or hemp through the holes. Tie the bag shut. Before I tied the bag shut, I tied on a poem explaining the symbols of the Jack O’Lantern, which I’m including here in case you’re a Sunday School teacher who needs this by Sunday:

I am a Jack O’Lantern
My lights will shine so bright
For I’m a Christian pumpkin
My symbols tell what’s right

My nose is like the cross
On which our Savior died
To set us free from sin
We need no longer hide

My mouth is like a fish
The whole wide world to show
That Christians live in this house
And they love their Savior so!

The story starts at Christmas
My eyes are like the star
That shone on Baby Jesus
And wise men saw from far

My color, it is orange
Just like the big bright sun
That rose on Easter Day
Along with God’s own Son

And so on Halloween
Let’s set our pumpkins out
And tell the trick-or-treaters
What God’s love is all about!

And viola! A really cute, quick Halloween treat bag! Happy Halloween!
